For the June meeting we plan to honor long time Constable and Association member, Jimmy Thomas. Constable Thomas served the community and our Association for many years not only in his LE duties but also as our chaplain. He will be present at the meeting.

I would like to formally welcome and congratulate South Carolina’s newest State Constables. Constable Mack Dodson, Constable Scott Hovis, Constable Tom Gilkeson, Constable Darren Halgas, and Constable Trey Fowler all recently passed their basic Constable exam and became credentialed. Everyone in the class passed which is exciting to hear. Some of these guys have been in the pipeline a VERY long time and their endurance in the face of setbacks and institutional frustrations has been inspiring. A solid batch of guys from everything I have heard. For you new guys, the August meeting may be especially interesting as we will have an instructor going over gear/equipment selection and setup for efficiency. Even experienced guys will benefit from getting some ideas on how to tweak and improve their setups.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the BMW Pro-Am this year. Our guys performed well and looked great! I personally received many good reports on our service over the weekend. The hours are long and it can get hot out there but I didn’t hear any of our guys complain. Your hard work earned us $15,000. This check, along with the money from the gun shows will allow us to continue to seek out high quality training opportunities for the Association over the next year. As always, this is YOUR money. If you have specific training you would like to see, let us know and we will work on it.

I want you to begin the process of developing your own personal shooting standards. Standards or benchmarks are a powerful tool because it’s a raw you vs you moment where you can objectively see if you are up to par, improving, or letting your skills slip below an acceptable level. This is different than keeping track of person records (PRs). Every day we are getting better at some things while getting worse at others. It is a natural byproduct of only having so much time and attention to spend on too many responsibilities and interests. A standard is set at the baseline where even on a bad day, you should be capable of achieving that level. A dip in performance doesn’t mean you are “bad at” that skill, it just reflects a lack of time or effort in that area. You can start by borrowing someone else’s standard, but you quickly need to figure out what makes sense for you and your mission. Not every LEO needs to shoot a pistol at a grandmaster level or be a BJJ black belt. If you don’t own a gas mask or night vision… you don’t need gas mask or night vision standards. Defining and holding yourself to well thought out standards will help keep your focus on what is important to you and on your reason for developing that specific skill. You should train to a level where you can meet your chosen standard cold and at any time.

If your yearly firearms qualification is your standard for how well you should shoot, you are wrong. State and agency qualification standards are an administrative checkbox, not an excellent way to prove that an officer can perform with a firearm at a high level.

The goal on this month’s drill is not to get your fastest blazing time that takes a 5 minute warmup to land. The goal is to figure out what your repeatable gold standard is or should be. On these pistol shots there’s enough time that you don’t have to point shoot. You have time to get a sight picture and then break the trigger at the moment of full presentation. Don’t sit and hang out at full presentation while you over confirm for an extra half second.

If you can’t meet the standard written here, no worries. It’s completely arbitrary. Get a solid 5-10 reps in and see where you are at and if that’s good enough for you or if you need a standard that is at a higher level than your current performance.

We had a fantastic in depth interview-style training session focused on the critical elements surrounding an officer-involved shooting. This session will cover the physical and mental preparation leading up to such an event, the immediate aftermath, and key tactical considerations for responding to an active shooter. The conversation will be led by our Director of Training, Scott Moore, in a one-on-one interview with Deputy Romick, who navigated these challenges firsthand on June 14th of last year. Through candid discussion and shared experience, we aim to enhance readiness, decision-making, and officer safety in high-risk environments.

           About Deputy Romick:

Deputy Romick has served with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office for four years, spending three of those years on uniformed patrol in West Greenville. He is currently assigned to the Community Action Team in West Greenville and is an active member of both the GCSO Search and Rescue and Peer Support Units. Before his law enforcement career, Romick served five years on active duty with the 101st Airborne and now serves as a Civil Affairs Team Sergeant in the Army Reserves. In 2024, he received the Distinguished Service Award for the rescue of a downed paraglider on June 1st. Thirteen days later, he was involved in a critical incident while responding to a high-priority 911 call.

           The Bill Drill

           Range: 7yd
Target: standard IPSC target/”A zone” target
Start position: gun in holster, hands at surrender position or interview stance
Rounds fired: 6

The Bill Drill is intended to improve speed without sacrificing accuracy. The details listed above are the traditional version, but any 6-shot drill done at speed on a single target can achieve the same basic goal.

Six shots are fired as quickly as the shooter can achieve six hits on the target. The drill teaches sight tracking, proper visual reference, recoil management, and trigger manipulation.

One important aspect of the Bill Drill is learning to follow your sights during recoil so that you can fire your next shot as soon as you have an adequate sight picture. Usually, this means pulling the trigger as soon as the front sight comes back down onto the scoring zone without waiting for precise alignment or for the sight to stop movement in the middle of the target. At full speed, the front sight is constantly moving, never coming to rest until the drill is over. If you gun has an optic, you will see a flash of red over the A zone but don’t wait for the dot to completely stop and settle into the perfect position.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made our February live fire event a success! We had a great turn out, the association handed out 2,000 rounds of 9mm, and I saw noted improvement in those who attended by the end of the day. Don’t lose momentum after a big event like this! Work on your dry fire every week and try to get to the range once a month! I always include a “drill of the month” at the bottom of these emails to give you ideas of different things to try. If you ever need help with ideas of what to do or where to go to train, please reach out to Scott Moore, Doug Pursley, Steve Cassell, or myself and we will be happy to point you in the right direction and help as much as we can. I plan to try to fit in one more live fire event this year in the fall/winter (this will be the first year we attempt two) so I would love to hear your feedback. Do you guys enjoy these events? Anything else you would like to see? Your feedback is valued. Train hard, shoot straight, and stay safe.

The December Drill is called the 5X5 drill. For this drill, fire 5 rounds at a 5 inch circle from 5 yards in 5 seconds or less. Sounds very easy, but do it 5 times in a row (total of 25 rounds) and see if you can do it without dropping any rounds!

I am looking forward to breaking bread with you at the Christmas Banquet on December 14th! Come hungry and ready for a time of fun and fellowship. I think getting to know each other on a personal level outside of our normal interactions will be a good morale boost. Getting to know some of you on a deeper than surface level this year has been very rewarding to me personally. We have a lot of interesting folks in the Association with all kinds of incredible experiences.

Please help me and participate in the following short survey. Several of you have asked about doing some basic training on patrol rifle so that we have a base level of proficiency if/when the SLED policy changes. I am not opposed to it, but it only makes sense if enough folks want to participate. The survey will simply ask if you own a suitable rifle and if you have had formal tactical training on it. If you are interested in this type of training, even if you don’t currently own such a rifle, please complete the survey and put that in the notes. If you don’t fill out the survey, I will assume you are not interested. If the response dictates, I will add something along these lines to the schedule for next year. Click on the underlined link below entitled “Patrol Rifle Survey” to participate.

At our January 2025 meeting (Don’t forget that it is on a TUESDAY!) we are going to start the year off with handing out some new gear. Try to be there if at all possible. It’ll be a great time. If you have any questions about the change in date please reach out and let me know. Again (and I will keep reminding you), both January and February will be different and then back on the normal schedule for the rest of the year.

As we enter the holiday season and finish out the year, please make sure that all your annual paperwork and SLED required documents are sent in to SLED including your quarterly report for 4th quarter. If you need help or have questions, let me know and I will help you work through it. Putting the work in now will help make sure everyone is good when the ride lists are published.

Remember that for firearms qualification in 2025 we have a lot of options. First, I would love you to qualify with your agency. If you shoot well, this gives the guys that you ride with confidence in your ability because otherwise they would not have the opportunity to see you perform. Because of these reasons, qualifying along side the officers you work with is the preferred method. If you are not able to qualify with the agency you ride with, we will have two days for qualification that will be open to all constables. We will have a day in April with SCC and a day in June with GCSO. Those options should be enough to get the majority of you qualified for the year. If none of those options work, you are always able to pay an academy instructor to qualify you privately on your own time. I can help connect you with an instructor if you need this option and don’t have someone to do it for you. Try to get it knocked out in the first few months of the year so you can submit it and be done with it!
